Imagine you need to ask your boss for the afternoon off.
1. Communicate so your needs are understood.
Clearly say what you want.
Example: “I need to take the afternoon off.”
2. Communicate so you understand the needs of others.
This requires that you actively listen to the other person’s perspective. Don’t think about what you want to say in response while they are still talking. Listen carefully and then repeat back what you’ve heard to make sure you are both understand each other.
Example: “I understand that you need me to finish this project by the end of the day.”
3. Be creative to find a compromise.
Decision-making isn’t a competition. Don’t try to win the issue or only get your way. Look for the win-win.
Example: “I will come in early tomorrow morning to finish the project.”
